Homeschool Astronomy - Seeing What You Can’t See

June 22nd, 2008 by michelefulk

By Aurora Lipper How do you find something that you can’t see? Radios and cosmic ray detectors are fine, but what if it doesn’t emit or reflect anything (anything being electromagnetic radiation)? If a particle is electrically neutral (no plus or minus inside like protons and electrons), then there is no way for it to be seen (emit light), or even cool off (radiate photons). What type of signature do you look for? A fellow astronomer from Princeton University headed up a project to do just that. The idea behind it is this: if you were to photograph the stars one night, then months later photograph the same stars during a solar eclipse, you’d find the star positions had shifted a bit. The quick answer: the sun’s gravitational pull bends the incoming starlight to your eye (no sun at night, remember!). Since gravity is a universal force acting on all things, electrically charged or not, you could potentially pick up undetectable objects in this way. An undetectable “dark matter” object could float in from of a star you’re watching, causing the incoming starlight to bend around and make the star appear brighter. To give you an idea of numbers: for a dark matter object the mass of a large asteroid, the time of the shifted star brightness is about 3 minutes. For something with the mass of the earth, it’s 3 hours. The mass of the sun? 2 weeks of shifted brightness. The mass of a white dwarf or neutron star? 2 months. A black hole ten times the size of the sun? 8 months of shifted starlight. Five years ago, astronomers began scanning the Large Magellenic Cloud (LMC) and kept track of heaps of stars. What did they find? That there is more dark matter than anything else in the universe combined. The next question is, if we’ve been missing these things for this long, what else is out there we’ve missed? It is indeed a great lesson in humility and how little we truly understand about our home, the universe. Once Catholic, Lapsed Catholics, Fallen Away Catholics, and Others Not Fed Spiritually

June 19th, 2008 by michelefulk

By Michael Guth People who were once Catholic, or now consider themselves lapsed Catholics, those Catholics who are struggling with their faith, and others who have an interest in Catholicism from their childhood days but have explored a different journey of faith, now have a new forum to discuss their spiritual growth. Some people feel they are not fed by a Church that emphasizes conforming to rules and regulations, rather teaching than love. These people are not being fed spiritually by the church. Others find the stories in the Bible do not offer solutions to problems they encounter in daily life. For others, the pronouncements of bishops or the pope may turn them off and away from the institutional church, but at heart they remain Catholic in their outlook. EXAMPLE OF POSTING: In his book, MERE CHRISTIANITY, C. S. Lewis writes that sins of the flesh are among the least serious and least worrisome sins of man. Instead, C. S. Lewis states, and philosopher/theologian Thomas Merton might agree –I vaguely recall a quote from Merton on topic but can’t identify it at the moment — that PRIDE is the worst sin of all. Pride gets us into wars. Pride leads to putting down others, financially, politically, religiously, etc. The hierarchy, starting with Pope Benedict and following all bishops who try to move in lockstep with him as if there is some charm in that, has gone back to Thomas Aquinas’s 13th-century view of morality: homosexual conduct is a top 3 sin for Aquinas. Imagine that! Do Catholics in 2007 want to partake in a Church that, by its preaching and attitude casts all gays into Hell, but murderers might make it into Heaven if they express sorrow? I have often thought as a professor who teaches courses online at the university level that I should assign a weekly grade to our local bishop and to the pope. A few weeks they might earn As, but for the majority of weeks they would receive a grade of F. Our local bishop aligned himself with religious fundamentalist bigots and proudly took some credit for our state’s passage of a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriages. I would have thought he would look left and right and see the type of people with whom he was aligned politically on that issue and have pause. Yesterday, the bishops came out with a message that said orientation is no sin but acting on it is a sin. That is going to antagonize more people towards the Church, and it creates a false dilemma for priests and other religious who risk ridicule just for acknowledging their orientation. I have serious doubts about whether I can stay in a church that persecutes or scorns one (powerless) class of humans. ___________________________ Today’s Bishop’s Decisions: news story The doctrine committee presented a document addressing ministering to homosexuals. While maintaining the church’s traditional teaching thathomosexual acts are “morally disordered” and “contrary to the natural law,” the new document softens the church’s attitude toward homosexuals who remain chaste. “While the Church teaches that homosexual acts are immoral, she does distinguish between engaging in homosexual acts and having a homosexual inclination,” the document reads. “While the former is always sinful, the latter is not. … simply having the tendency is not a sin.” The document also takes up the issue of baptizing the adopted children of gay couples, saying that while the matter “presents a pastoral concern the Church does not refuse the Sacrament of Baptism to these children” if there’s reason to believe the children will be brought up Catholic. The bishops’ pro-life committee presented a new document about birth control aimed at engaged and married Catholic couples. It reaffirms the Church’s much-ignored teaching that contraception is immoral. A 2003 ABC News poll reported that 94 percent of Catholics found “using the birth control pill or condoms” morally acceptable. A 2005 Harris poll reported that birth control is supported by 90 percent of American Catholics. The bishops’ own numbers aren’t much better, saying only 4 percent “of Catholic married couples of childbearing age use Natural Family Planning,” according to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website. The doctrine committee also proposed a question-and-answer pamphlet that seeks to catechize, or teach, Catholics the basics about Holy Communion and who may and may not receive it. Some bishops would like to deny communion to Catholic politicians who support abortion rights. St. Louiss archbishop even went so far as to say Catholics who voted for politicians who support abortion rights would be committing a mortal sin and would have to confess before receiving Holy Communion. He later clarified his statement saying Catholic voters would have to be voting for a candidate specifically because the candidate supported abortion rights for the Church to consider it a sin. _________________________________________ COMMENT 1: I never thought of truth as being determined by a democracy. Rather Truth exists whether or not we accept it. As Catholics we believe that the Holy Spirit guides the Church into all truth. We are all influenced by our culture. But our culture does not set out to always seek truth. Is Christ’s opinion of contraception, sex, homosexuality, etc. not worthy of consideration? Or do we think that we are so clever as to determine truth for ourselves? COMMENT 2: You ask: “Is Christ’s opinion of contraception, sex, homosexuality, etc. not worthy of consideration?” Christ said not one word about contraception or homosexuality and little about sex. He mentioned marriage and adultery, probably fornication (I’ll have to look that up to be sure), but he was not at all focused on these subjects. He focused on love, he focused on forgiveness, he focused on taking care of “the least of my brethren”. The Church sometimes seems to focus on nothing but sex. Everything else is secondary. Most Church teaching in these areas comes from people like Augustine and the Desert Fathers, who prized virginity above all things. Sex and marriage were tolerated simply as necessary for the continuation of the human race. Augustine even said it was a sin to enjoy sex while engaging in it for procreation purposes! I’m not sure how you do that, but… Anyone interested in discussing issues such as these can simply send an email message to OnceCatholicNotFedSpiritually-subscribe@yahoogroups.com Dr. Michael A. S. Selecting Your Wedding Centerpieces

June 1st, 2008 by michelefulk

By Andrea Britt Wedding centerpieces help tie together the look of your entire table setting. The wedding centerpieces will affect the linens you choose, the size of the tables and even the number of guests you seat on each table. It is important to discuss beforehand with your decorator and caterer the wedding centerpiece options available to you. Things to keep in mind when selecting wedding centerpieces: The size of the wedding centerpiece is of utmost importance. The wedding centerpiece should not be so small as to get overlooked. However, if it is too large there may not be enough room for other things like the place cards, cutlery, and crockery and in general the table may become too cramped. The height of the wedding centerpiece also needs to be carefully considered. If the wedding centerpiece you choose is something thin like a beautiful candle, the height won’t matter. In fact you may need it to be really tall to get noticed. On the other hand if the wedding centerpiece is a floral arrangement, ensure that it is short enough that guests can see each other over the arrangement. Often people choose wedding centerpieces that are so overwhelming that guests cannot even see each other across them, let alone hold a conversation! Your budget will of course determine the wedding centerpiece you choose. Wedding centerpieces can be very affordable or very extravagant. It is up to you to decide how much you want to spend. You could also choose a wedding centerpiece that doubles as wedding party favors. This is a great idea because it allows you to combine your budget for the wedding centerpieces and the party favors and afford something better. Wedding centerpiece options:Floral arrangements are the most common and traditional wedding centerpiece options. They can vary from small exotic arrangements to large effusive ones. If you want the wedding centerpiece to double as a party favor, think about placing a small potted plant that also acts as the place card holders. After the party guests can take their plant home. This works very well and merges with the wedding decoration for a garden theme party. Tabletop fountains make for exotic wedding centerpieces. They can certainly add an Asian feel to your entire wedding reception. Place votive candles around the fountain to give an exotic feel. A crystal bowl filled with rose petals floating in water makes a smashing wedding centerpiece. You can add floating candles if the wedding reception is at night. The roses not only add romance to the atmosphere, but their fragrance will enhance the entire wedding decoration. There are many options available when choosing your wedding centerpieces, and they are a big part of the overall wedding decoration, so give them the attention they deserve. You’ll be surprised how much they bring to your reception. Copyright Andrea Britt, 2005. All rights reserved. Reprint Rights: Feel free to use this article on your website or online publication. An Overview of the Cox-2 Inhibitor Drug Controversy

May 29th, 2008 by michelefulk

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Colin_Albert] Colin Albert In the Fall of 2004 it was learned that Cox-2 inhibitor drugs may cause some very serious side effects. What exactly are Cox-2 inhibitors, why were they developed and what are those side effects? In order to understand the functioning of Cox-2 inhibitors, we must first discuss nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, usually called NSAIDs. These include some very popular pain killers (Aspirin and Motrin) intended to relieve the inflammation of tendonitis, bursitis and arthritis. NSAIDs block both Cox-1 and Cox-2 enzymes. Cox-1 enzymes can be found in inflamed parts of the body as well as in the stomach. They produce prostaglandins, which help maintain the proper health of the stomachs mucus lining. Cox-2 enzymes, which are not present in the stomach, also create prostaglandins, which the body uses to deal with inflammations. Due to the impeding of Cox-1 enzymes, many people are presented with gastronomical side effects when they take NSAIDs. These side effects may include ulcers and stomach bleeding, bloating, heartburn, vomiting and nausea. And in the most serious cases, kidney or liver failure may be caused. The drug companies correctly concluded that there would be a very significant market for an anti-inflammatory drug that did not include a Cox-1 inhibitor, but instead specifically only blocked the Cox-2 enzymes in the areas of the body that were inflamed. No Cox-1 inhibitors, no more gastronomical side effects, the reasoning went. A drug that only blocked Cox-2 enzymes would provide relief to millions of arthritis patients, without causing the stomach problems many suffered with the NSAIDs. About a decade ago the Cox-2 inhibitor medications appeared in Americas drugstores. The medical establishment pronounced these Cox-2 inhibiting drugs as a major advance. Over the following years, drugs including Vioxx, Celebrex and Bextra were prescribed to countless patients suffering with inflammatory pains including arthritis. The results were good. These drugs reduced the pain, but did not show the gastronomical side effects associated with the older NSAIDs. But in late 2004, notwithstanding the reduced incidence of stomach-related problems, the maker of Vioxx, Merck made the decision to pull the drug from pharmacy shelves. In doing so, Merck referred to an increased incidence of both strokes and heart attacks amongst patients taking the product for more than 18 months. Later in 2004, a Texas jury awarded damages of $1,000,000,000 to the widow of a Vioxx user. Early in 2006, an expert panel recommended that Vioxx be reintroduced onto pharmacy shelves. However the Food and Drug Administration is still looking at the matter. Early in 2005, Bextras manufacturer decided to remove it from our pharmacies. The FDAs view is that it offers no advantages over other NSAIDs, but may actually increase the chances of stroke and heart attack, and also cause serious skin problems. Regarding Celebrex, the Food and Drug Administration, while confirming an increase in heart attacks and strokes especially with high doses, concluded that the benefits of Celebrex may outweigh these potential side effects. So Celebrex can still be bought in pharmacies. Research is being done to study the potential long-term side effects of each of these Cox-2 inhibitor drugs. For example, European scientists concluded that some popular NSAIDs are just as likely to raise the risk of heart attacks as are the Cox-2 drugs. Another recent study concluded that using Vioxx had a higher risk of cardiovascular side effects than does the other two drugs. The debate continues. Colin Albert operates the LifeFormulas web site, which presents a blog about his experiences with his ITV Ventures business. One of the supplements he sells from that business is [http://www.lifeformulas.com/flexprotex] FlexProtex, which includes a completely natural COX-2 inhibitor and a high-grade Glucosamine for increased joint functioning, as well as relief from discomfort. Self Scan Grocery Check Out - Enhancement or Nightmare?

May 26th, 2008 by michelefulk

By Felicia A. Williams Have you ever used the self-scan when checking out your groceries? Man, what an experience. I usually do my shopping early in the morning before my two cups of coffee have had a chance to wear off. The stores aren’t too crowded and I can power walk up and down the isles tossing food in the cart left and right. I stop occasionally to put on my extra pair of eyes to make sure that I’m not buying a cart full of trans fats and sugars, otherwise it’s smooth sailing. I love to food shop; nothing to try on, kids are in school so no distractions. A very pleasant experience. To make things even better, there are now the self scan isles. Whoa, I must be in heaven. Not only do I get to really play out my childhood fantasy of being a cashier (back then you actually had to touch the keys on the cash register, hear the cha-ching sound. Afterwards, you had to be able to correctly count out change, but I digress), I also get my morning workout of lifting scanning and bagging at breakneck speed (coffee does that you know). I’m ecstatic to be able to take the contents of my cart, scan the little black lines accurately past a little 5 inch square window and then toss the groceries onto the conveyor belt. I’m in heaven until… WHAM, Like a brick, a very loud female voice erupts from somewhere behind the little scan window “PLEASE SCAN YOUR ABC STORE CARD…SYSTEM PROCESSING…YOUR CARD HAS BEEN ACCEPTED…PLEASE BEGIN SCANNING…” Yikes! No one has yelled at me like that since the time my mother caught me lighting a little fire under my baby brother while he was in his high chair! Eeeooouuussa! Where is this screaming wench? Come on out from behind that scanning window. I’ve got a little something for you, it’s a wonderful product called duct tape. C’mon, show yourself. Not being one to cause a fuss, I obeyed the loud computer voice and begin scanning. Hmm, I’ll start with the peaches…beep (the sound of the scan) TWO NINETY NINE…SAVINGS…FIFTY CENTS…PLACE YOUR PEACHES ON THE BELT. I turn around to my neighboring isle, Did you get that? Yes, they’re on sale. Everyone in the store knows I bought peaches. Beep FIVE SIXTY NINE…PLACE YOUR BATTERIES ON THE BELT. Okay, I finally try to get used to the screaming banshee in the computer when my organic grapes won’t scan. PLEASE REMOVE YOUR …ITEM…FROM THE BELT…HELP IS REQUIRED. Argh!! I look up and down the isle for help and help is nowhere to be found. (I’m feeling pressure, the line in back of me is getting longer.) Ah, the heck with it. I’ll forego the…IF YOU ARE FINISHED SCANNING PLEASE PRESS FINISH AND PAY. How rude! I’m in the middle of deciding what to do with the grapes. Urgh! I ditch the grapes and keep scanning until the blaring voices says THE BAGGING AREA IS FULL, PLEASE BAG YOUR GROCERIES BEFORE SCANNING. Of course as I stop to bag, the impatient obnoxious loud voice screams IF YOU ARE FINISHED SCANNING PLEASE PRESS FINISH AND PAY (why I ought a…) Groceries bagged, I continue to scan my items until my cart is empty. I press the appropriate button to terminate this little adventure as yelled to me by the computer. YOUR TOTAL IS ONE HUNDRED SIXTY TWO DOLLARS AND SEVENTY-SEVEN CENTS. Ok, my discreet little shopping trip is now front page news. I scan my debit card to which the computer voice booms, PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE PIN PAD (no duh, you mean you don’t get to yell at me further?) I take care of the payment. THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING AT ABC STORE, DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE YOUR RECEIPT. Can’t we mute these things? Aside from the fact that I place My Two Cents on the world wide web for everyone to see, I’m really a very private person. I wish the self scan computer woman would realize this! That’s my two cents and I’m sticking with it. Deeds Variation - The 2 Year Rule

May 18th, 2008 by michelefulk

By Janine Byrne Introduction I recently received a query from a practicing solicitor asking for advice on using Deeds of Variation. The solicitor in question was acting on behalf of clients who wished to alter the terms of their father’s Will to afford a fairer disposition of the assets amongst family members. Ordinarily this would one of the situations where a Deed of Variation could be employed. However, the testator’s death was 6 years ago. The query was despite the lapse in time, could a Deed of Variation still be used without asking for it to be applied retrospectively for the purposes of inheritance tax and capital gains tax? The Purpose of the 2 Year Rule To recap from my previous article, in order to be valid a Deed of Variation must comply with 3 conditions; Must be made in writing. All persons who were original beneficiaries in the Will and any persons who benefit from the proposed variations in the Deed must sign the Deed. It cannot be given for money or money’s worth. It must be made within 2 years of the death of the decedent. One of the most crucial uses for a Deed of Variation is to affect the tax liability on an estate. Therefore, for a Deed to be valid it must be made within 2 years of the death of the testator in order to be applied retrospectively for Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax. If a Deed of Variation fails to comply with this - or any of the other conditions - it ceases to have retrospective affect for tax purposes, and amounts to nothing more than a transfer of value - namely, a gift. Having liased with the Inland Revenue on this subject, it is clear that Deeds of Variation are only to be used within the 2 year period as, to quote an Inland Revenue adviser “there would be no point in using such instruments after that time as it would afford no tax saving benefit”. Changing the Will after the 2 Year Period So, what do you do if you wanted to change the terms of a Will after the 2 year period? As stated above, where a Deed of Variation does not comply with the 2 year rule, any dispositions which the beneficiaries seek to make via the Deed amount to nothing more that simple transfers of value, gifts. Thus, the approach to adopt would be to make Potentially Exempt Transfers of the assets which the beneficiaries seek to redistribute. This is as simple as handing over the gift, or saying ‘I give up my interest and gift it to you’. It is always advisable however, particularly where substantial interests in property are involved, to write a memorandum of the potentially exempt transfer. Such a memorandum should include the name of the person giving the gift, to whom the gift is given and the date. Finding a Russian Bride Safely

May 14th, 2008 by michelefulk

By Cenk Butunley Since the early years of 19th century, ordering brides via mail had never lost its popularity amongst the men for finding a special bride. Some men found the love they have been looking for and some women found the financial security, family and new horizons in foreign countries. With the increasing popularity, business got bigger and bigger, dozens of new agencies formed and millions of singles tried building families and in fact 54% of them succeeded. What changed was with the birth of the Internet, some people whom we now call scammers used the advantages of online dating services and thousands of innocent men got suckered millions of dollars for finding the love or a possible wife from foreign countries. These scammers posted some fake pictures on dating sites, emailed innocent men using special patterns of content in their messages and mostly succeeded in their evil plans. So must you be afraid of looking for a russian bride on the net? Definitely not. According to researches, 89% percent of russian women looking for a spouse on the internet have honest intentions and only 50% percent of these women find the love from distant lands. And again according to the researches 76% of scammers are men who even do not live in the country they claim to. So what can you do to avoid being scammed? How can you know if your potential bride is a scam or not? So here are some tips to differentiate a scammer from an honest woman: You have a profile on a dating site. Maybe youre not so popular or even you dont have a picture on this site. And out of nowhere you started getting letters from a russian beauty. Thats is a red flag and you must be very cautious. The picture(s) is another point. Some russian girls do not have the financial means to buy a digital camera or even to get their pictures taken from a professional. So if the picture(s) youre seeing is too good to be true or the image names contain long numbers, this is another flag. A scammer never reads your emails properly. All they do is to tell about themselves and pretending to fall in love after 3-4 letters. If she/he talks about her financial problems in the first or second letter, this is a big red flag and its better if you can reconsider wasting your time or money with her/him. Never send any money for VISA or airplane tickets, sick family members or phone bills. If she really loves for whom youre, she will not ask for this before she meets you anyway. So these are some important points you must never forget or ignore. It was proven that the best way to meet a woman from abroad is visiting her on her city. Contract vs. Pay as You Go

May 9th, 2008 by michelefulk

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Victor_Epand]Victor Epand There are many pros and cons associated with buying a cell phone, whether it is Contract or Pay as You Go. In UK, Pay as You Go has been very popular now that the mobile operators have realized that it is a realistic solution to draw in a younger market. Most of the Pay as You Go options that I am aware of in the US are quite frankly ludicrous due to the fact that the operator who supply them are still trying to take too much of a cut. Take for example this section from Verizon Wireless’ Pay as You Go small print: Ninety-nine cents daily access will be charged and deducted from your account even on days you do not make or receive calls. Verizon Wireless will suspend service if you do not have the ninety-nine cents required for your daily access, when your account balance reaches zero dollars or your account balance reaches the expiration date. Unlimited IN and Night minutes not available when your account balance has been suspended and subject to termination, at which time Verizon Wireless may charge up to thirty-five dollars activation fee to re-establish service. Any balance remaining at expiration will be removed from the account. The INpulse card is not valid unless initialized by the date on the back of the setup card. Service availability depends on the phone model. Unfortunately, INpulse pricing is not available with analog-only phones. Voice mail setup and retrievals are billed at regular INpulse rates and will deplete minute allowance when calling from your wireless phone. Charge per call for 411 Connect may vary when not on the Verizon Wireless INpulse Coverage Area. Restrictions and limitations may apply. Automatic connection and enhanced services are not guaranteed at all times or in all areas and rates may vary when roaming on another carrier. For connected calls, the part of the call that occurs prior to connection may have different rates from the part of the call that occurs after connection. Additional toll/long distance charges may apply. You can make three requests per call and get automatic call completion for one requested telephone number at no extra charge. Using Get It Now, download charges may apply to application download. Airtime charges apply to application downloads and use of some applications. Use of Get It Now is subject to the Get It Now License and User Agreements. See Verizon’s website for more information on Get It Now. You may be charged for downloading Get It Now applications. Charges vary by application and applications vary by phone. Get It Now-enabled phone is required and may require a connection in the INpulse All-Digital Rate and Coverage Area. Coverage limitations in maps at Verizon’s website. Where applicable, airtime, roaming and other charges may apply when browsing, downloading, using and removing certain applications. Subject to Get It Now Agreements. Existing Verizon Wireless prepay customers will forfeit any unused bonus minutes in their account when changing to the INpulse Calling Plan. There are far to many extra cost associated with this, that in the end you would probably end up paying out more than you would on a low monthly contract. I would sugest that you take a look at the contract phones available to you from different operators, I know that Verizon has very good coverage right accros the US, there are some very resonably priced deals available that would be a lot less hassle and, in the long run cheaper than the Pay as You Go option.
